5 restaurants that serve up spooky for those with the Halloween spirit

Mobster Mickey Cohen ran a betting scam out of here (try to find his safe) and though co-owner Lem Quon died in 1993, he’s still around – especially if you choose to sit in his favorite booth, number 8. If you see a small, elderly Asian man in a singular cardigan, be sure to smile and say hello…. One of the original luxury hotels in L.A., the Biltmore is a world of chandeliers, staircases and afternoon tea. Some of the early Oscar ceremonies were held her, but perhaps most famously it stood in for the “Hotel Sedgewick” in 1984’s Ghostbusters – Ray, Egon and Peter caught “Slimer” in what’s now the lobby. 25 spots guaranteed to make you the hero of the office—or at least make everyone forget what you did at the last holiday party.

LA Restaurants We’re Pretty Sure Are Haunted

Mosey up at the bar, order a Traxx Martini (Hendricks Gin, dry Vermouth, a float of Dubonnet Rouge) and watch the living people arrive in this glorious, high-ceilinged Art Deco masterpiece. Still looking great at 76, Union Station has been the place where countless starry-eyed wannabes have arrived looking for stardom – though newlywed Martha Virginia James didn’t make it to the City of Angels. In 1943 dining car cook Robert E. Lee Folkes was arrested on arrival at Union Station, and charged with murdering her en route from Seattle.

Going forward, the restaurant plans to lean even further into the horror theme with movie trivia and a costume party for Comic Con. The Twilight ($16.99) is a super sweet strawberry take on chicken and waffles. Sticky fried chicken wings replace the typical breast and sit atop a crispy black waffle with a cream cheese whipped frosting that makes it feel more like breakfast for dessert. The entree menu offers selections such as a burger and a chicken sandwich and salmon and lamb pops at market price. Executive chef Darnell Ferguson rolls out huge with an extra focus on vegan options, including the Bang Bang Cauliflower ($13.99) and Ecto Impossible Burger ($15.99), and “Brinner,” or breakfast for dinner. Ferguson is best known for his hero-themed SuperChef’s Breakfast & More concept in Louisville and Columbus and has appeared on Rachael Ray and Food Network’s Grill of Victory, among others.

Once through the door, guests are greeted in the lobby to the movie theater atmosphere to the smell popcorn, and an old-time ticket booth replacing the traditional hosting area. Movie characters abound from “Ghostbusters” and “The Adams Family” to Jason from “Friday the 13th” and Pennywise from Stephen Kings “It.” In keeping with the horror movie theme, “potions” will be available at the full bar. Built in 1864 by German immigrants, this one-time brewery, boardinghouse and brothel reportedly offers a barside conversation with disembodied voices, including that of one regular, Al Capone.

Horror-Themed Restaurants and Bars in Canada

Geoffrey’s is a Malibu institution, and if you think a few renovations over the years have deterred the ghosts from getting in on the action, you’re obviously unaware of just how much ghosts love Malibu. The views are spectacular, the rent is finally free, and the food hasn’t changed much since they were in the flesh. It’s a triple-threat scenario for the paranormal, so as you’re snacking on some better-than-expected crab cakes, stay alert—there are definitely some see-through vultures looking to snag a bite.

LOS ANGELES

Your pint may actually fall off the bar when ghosts swipe at it. Still, it’s better to blame the nearby Revolutionary War mass grave, where rumor says not everyone was dead before being buried. Walking into this nautical-themed dive bar in Ktown feels like stepping onto a fishing barge that got lost at sea in the ’40s and has been floating around ever since. There are musty leather booths, “Careless Whisper” quietly playing over the intercom, and scattered tables filled with solo diners eating steak and sipping well tequila from a shot glass.

Carpe Noctum (embrace the night) in Buffalo’s only literary-themed romantic horror bar inspired by the woman who wrote one of the earliest gothic horror novels. It’s not horror-themed as much as fantasy as it draws its inspiration from Harry Potter. But it’s a fun one we couldn’t resist adding to this list. Especially because you’re given a cloak and a wand to conjure up your own concoctions. Since I figured that might be helpful info others might like to know too, I created a Google Maps of horror-themed restaurants and pubs.

Zoe St. Armand rose from bed one night in a desperate search for her sister. Grief had overtaken her, and she had forgotten that her sis was long dead. A tumble down the stairs would send her to the same fate, although she rose again, they say, as the home’s ghost. Now she frightens guests of the restaurant that occupies Poogan's Porch, famous for its Lowcountry cuisine of she-crab soup and fried chicken. The local po-po reportedly gets so many calls about her vestige appearing in the windows of the restaurant that they know not to send anyone to investigate, even if that she-crab soup is something special. Perhaps it’s the woman at the bar with a rhinestone cane, or Rhea Perlman ripping shots of gin with the maitre d’, but the energy inside Dan Tana’s has always felt a bit otherworldly.

Although it bills itself as a Haunted Restaurant, the theming inside is perhaps better suited for scary movie fans. Jennifer chose the Twilight entrée ($15.99) that consists of a crispy black waffle with  cream cheese whipped topping and a pair of "sticky" fried chicken wings with a red,  blood-like syrup along the edge of the plate. We were intrigued by the Brinner offerings that combine breakfast, lunch and dinner items all on one plate. And once you make your way to the table, you are greeted by a bowl of fresh popcorn instead of the usual warm bread served up at more traditional restaurants. A nice added touch is an assortment of flavored toppings from the requisite butter to the more adventurous garlic Parmesan. This restaurant has been on my bucket list since it opened.

Here, you could be touched by an unseen spirit—including one that may riffle your hair or crawl into bed with you —or hear a creepy disembodied voice talking. There are also possibly haunted tunnels under the hotel and a pet cemetery with the spirit of a golden retriever, which we can all agree is the most adorable-sounding ghost. It describes itself as “Pittsburgh’s only Halloween bar” and it’s open 7 days a week…or, rather, 7 nights a week.

But then last year the opening of places like Raven’s Manor, a gothic cocktail lounge in Portland, Oregon (right near the Voodoo Doughnut in Old Town), and the Haunted House Restaurant in Cleveland, Ohio, caught my eye. Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group hosts a chilling series of vignettes. “When you come here, it’s like going to Cedar Point — it’s an experience,” says Scott.

This Hollywood institution has been around since 1919, and therefore, is the recipient of our Highest Probability Of Flirting With A Bartender Who Is Also A Ghost Award. In truth, Musso & Frank is filled mostly with brochure-toting tourists and food that hasn’t changed much since opening day, but if you leave here in a bad mood, you can only blame yourself. The martinis are some of our favorite in town, the waiters all still wear red jackets and bowties, and there’s a hidden phone booth in the back in the event things get hot and heavy with your ghost-tender. On any given night at this legendary Valley spot, you’ll see celebrities, security guards, and various deceased studio workers who just can’t give up the business. The place opened in 1942 and is essentially a series of interconnected dining rooms with fireplaces, wood-paneled walls, and hundreds of framed acting headshots.
